Having spent the last 15 months on a diet I decided it was time to put in a bit more effort and start working for my weight-loss. After all I can’t stay looking like a oompa-loompa forever can I?!
I had the EA Sports Active 2 game for my PS3 all ready and waiting (thanks @merewillis and @4forkssake) so have set about getting myself started with working out. I’ve got myself into a nice routine, getting up early and working out before work on my four scheduled work out days. I’m going to admit it’s bloody hard work, but I’m starting to feel fitter already….hoorah!
One of the things that appealed most to me about this ‘game’, other than the heart rate monitor included, was that it had online support and the facility to join online workout groups for moral support. Having now got into a routine with my workouts I decided to log onto the website and search out a workout group to join.
Then I came across this:
The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level — fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles — where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.
Further down the page was a list of games affected and of course there was EA Sports Active 2……bloody typical!
I’m hoping the shutdown won’t affect any of the in-game services, it does spend a lot of time contacting servers so I have my fingers crossed, but it’s pretty disappointing that one of the main reasons I chose this ‘game’ over other workout ‘games’ is being discontinued in a few weeks time.
Luckily there is a really active community at My Fitness Pal which is the site/app I have been using to manage my diet since I started it, and there are several groups starting up there because of the EA shutdown made up of people like me who want to be in touch with others taking part in the same workout programmes.
It’s a real shame though, it’s a pretty active community, but I guess it’s just not active enough for EA.
Anybody else got any recommendations for workout ‘games’ / DVD’s they use?
