EP Review: Arkhamin Kirjasto – Undead Priest of Holy Trinity of Death

arkhamin kirjasto ep cover smallAs I mentioned in my post yesterday, Arkhamin Kirjasto are due to release this EP on July 18th. Recorded in the same sessions as they recorded their debut album ‘Torches Ablaze’ it features three new tracks.

Opening with title track ‘Undead Priest of Holy Trinity of Death’ this is a very sublime take on the death metal genre, much more the way of sludge or doom metal. The track depicts the rather unholy story of a priest raising the undead, it’s very Evil Dead in it’s tone but quite holy in it’s sound. A definite contradiction between the content and sound.

Track two is ‘The Nomad’ again with the religious undertone it talks of a revenant wanderer who slaughters everything he comes across. Much more fast-paced this track is almost psychedelic in it’s execution but doesn’t hold much substance and is over before it even begins.

The final track is ‘Spellbound & Tortured’ this time telling the story of a sadist wizard, again, there is a lack of substance in the execution and the track suddenly ends just as it gets going. Weirdness.

The overall sound on this EP, is stuck in the seventies, somewhere between early death metal and doom. It’s aged and the tracks lack substance. The vocals are lost and this isn’t an EP I would rush out to buy.
